Description

The stable block at Fawley Hall dates to the early 18th century. Constructed of red brick with limestone dressings and an old tile roof, it is arranged in a U-shape. The main front faces the park and features a central, round-arched carriageway with a stone surround, impost blocks, and a keyblock, now blocked. The ground and first floors have windows with stone sills and gauged brick lintels, now fitted with 20th-century frames on the ground floor. A moulded stone cornice tops the facade, and a stone-coped brick parapet sits above. The roof is hipped, with a central timber clock turret rising from the ridge. This turret has an open, octagonal arcaded cupola on a square base, finished with a pyramidal lead roof, a ball finial, and an ornate wrought-iron weathervane. Projecting wings to the rear define a stable court. These rear elevations have segmental leads to the windows, and to the side away from the main house. A blocked segmental brick carriage arch and a blocked six-panel door are found in the middle of the courtyard-facing sides. An external staircase leads to the first floor on the left side of the arch. The building was later used as a furniture workshop, and as a result, no original stable fittings remain. The design is attributed to Francis Smith of Warwick.
