Description

Stuart Cottage is a cottage dating from 1686, with alterations made in the 18th or 19th century. It is constructed of coursed ironstone rubble and features a gable-ended roof covered in asbestos sheets, along with an ironstone rubble gable-end stack. The layout consists of a two-room plan with a through passage; the right (west) room is heated by a gable-end stack, while the left room was likely unheated originally. During the 18th or 19th century, the eaves were raised, and a single-storey wing was added to the rear of the lower left end.

The exterior is two storeys high and has an almost symmetrical north front with two windows. There are small two-light casements on the right and a small three-light casement on the ground floor to the left. The central doorway features a 20th-century plank door with a datestone above inscribed: G. over I.E. over 1686. Wooden lintels are present above the openings. The east gable end has various small casements, and the rear (south) side has a central door and the single-storey gable-ended wing on the right.

Inside, the cottage has axial ceiling beams and fireplaces with timber lintels in both ground floor rooms, one of which has an opening for an oven that has been removed. The interior is said to contain several 19th-century plank doors. One truss remains, featuring curved principals that are crossed and halved at the apex and halved onto a tie-beam.
