Description

The Youth Hostel is a building that was formerly a row of three cottages, dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century. It is constructed of coursed ironstone rubble, with some courses of brick below the eaves. The original thatched roof has been replaced with a corrugated iron roof, and there are brick ridge and end stacks, with stone bases on the end stacks. The building has a three-unit lobby-entry plan with single-unit additions at either end, and it stands two storeys high with a five-window range.

The ground floor features 20th-century plank doors to the left and right of the centre, a small central one-light leaded window, a three-light chamfered wood mullion and transom window to the left, and a leaded one-light window to the right. There is also a three-light casement window at the far left and a two-light 20th-century casement window at the far right. The first floor has a mix of one-, two-, and three-light casements, with the far left window having a dropped sill. All windows and doors are topped with timber lintels, and the three central ground floor windows have stop-chamfered lintels.

Inside, the building features stop-chamfered spine beams and rafters, an open fireplace with a stop-chamfered cambered bressumer, a well-preserved stud partition wall, and a roof supported by king post collar trusses.
