Description
The remains of the Dower House in Fawsley Park, located three-quarters of a mile northeast of Fawsley Hall, are a Grade II listed structure originally built as a hunting lodge in the early 16th century and later modified in the late 16th century. The building features ironstone ashlar and brick laid in irregular English bond, with brick lateral and end stacks, forming an H-plan layout.
The house comprises two ranges: the earlier front range made of brick with ironstone dressings, and the later back range of ironstone, completing the H shape. The front range includes a polygonal brick tower in the center of the long side, which has a first-floor moulded brick and stone string with deep hollow moulding and a battlemented parapet. The brickwork displays a diaper pattern with flared headers, and there are arch-mullion windows with 2, 3, and 4 lights, along with ironstone quoins. A large ironstone projecting end stack on the left features the base of twisted brick flues.
The stone range at the back has similar arch-mullion windows and a stack. The structure was ruined by the mid-18th century, with some repairs made in the 19th century. It is noted as the earliest brick structure in the county, according to Pevsner. Currently, it is in a very poor state of repair and heavily covered in ivy. The site is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument.
