Description
The Cedars and East Cedars are an unusual early 19th-century fronted house, with a structure of an earlier date and later 19th-century alterations. The two-storey, six-window front has a pebble-dashed lower section and a stucco upper section. A string with an incised key pattern divides the two, returning across the two doorways to form a frieze. The doorways feature Ionic pilasters with pebble-dashed panels and egg-and-dart cornices. The ground floor has three sash windows, one of which retains glazing bars. The first-floor sash windows have lost their original glazing bars. Shutters are present, and there is panel treatment with incised lines above the first-floor windows. A parapet tops the building, and the cornice features mutules and paterae. The roof has five hipped dormers. A two-storey bow with three-light sash windows projects from the west end to the rear. Remains of a late 19th-century painted sundial are also present. The property is part of a group that includes The Red House, Grey Lodge, Forecourt walls and railings to The Red House, Donore, Wall railings and gate to Donore, Eastbury House, Elizabeth House, Bracondale, Garden wall adjoining The Cedars on the west side, Corby House, Hill View Lodge, Masongill, Glenville and Long Street Post Office.
