Description
Lower Dairy House is a dairy house with a core dating from the 16th century, featuring an early 17th-century ceiling and later alterations including changes to the windows and repairs. The building has rubble-stone and chalk-block walls, with some 20th-century brick filling in the front wall. It has a slate roof, which is set above the original pitch, and gable ends, along with a brick stack on the right-hand gable. The structure is 1½ to 2 storeys high and has three windows, which are a mix of 2- and 3-light wooden casements with glazing bars, with the center upper window featuring rectangular leaded lights. The front door is centrally located and is a plank door with eight glazed lights in the upper half, dating from the 20th century.
Inside, the roof retains four jointed-cruck trusses, which are not gable-trusses, and includes through-purlins. The ground floor features heavy-chamfered ceiling beams with stepped stops. There is a large 17th-century open fireplace with brick jambs, a heavy-chamfered bressumer, and a broad oven in the left jamb. The flooring is made of flagstones, and the internal walls are constructed of chalk blocks.
