Description
The Church of St Basil is a parish church located in Toller Fratrum, dating from the mid-19th century. The building features a nave and chancel combined into one structure, with rubble-stone walls and dressed stone quoins. It has a slate roof adorned with stone gable copings and moulded kneelers. A stone bellcote is situated on the west gable, housing a bell, while the east gable displays a stone cross-in-wheel. The church is a single storey and includes three straight-chamfered lancet windows, each with a returned label above and diamond-leaded lights. The east window consists of three stepped lancets with a continuous label overhead. The west door is a pointed arch with moulded stone jambs, flanked by two re-used crowned head-stops.
Inside, the church features a plain pointed sanctuary arch and a roof of arch-braced collar construction supported by stone corbels, with clasped purlins and moulded wall-plate fittings. The font is a stone cylindrical bowl decorated with a band of interlace at the top, cable moulding below, and a series of six full-length figures, one holding a cross-shaft, along with half-figures and heads, supported by three enriched columns that depict a monster with one head and two bodies, dating from the 12th century. Additionally, there is a re-set stone sculpture on the east wall of the chancel, which shows part of the scene of St Mary Magdalene wiping the feet of Christ, with her head and Christ's foot and lower drapery visible, dating to around 1130. The pews, featuring fielded-panel ends, were added in the 19th century.
