Description
The stable block located immediately southeast of Little Toller Farm dates back to the mid-16th century. It features thinly coursed limestone walls with Ham stone dressings around the windows, doorhead, and string-course. The rear wall is constructed from banded chalk block and Lias stone, with a loft door situated at the northeast corner. The roof is thatched with gable ends and stone gable-coping at the north end.
This single-storey building has a west front that includes a moulded plinth and a string-course above the window heads. There are four windows, each consisting of two four-centred lights with a single glass pane in each light. Flanking the window heads are ornamental Renaissance pendants that extend from the string-course. Two carvings are present on the string: one depicts a boy playing bagpipes, and the other is a shield featuring a claw holding a hammer alongside the initials I.S., which stand for John Samways.
Towards the south end of the front, there is a blocked doorway with moulded jambs and a four-centred arch within a square head, featuring a small rosette in the center. The roof structure consists of eight bays with collar-beam construction and short jointed-crucks that are bedded into the wall. It includes two sets of through-purlins, and the loft space is supported by mid-chamfered beams with integral chalk block corbelling to carry the main beams. Internally, there are three blocked door positions located between the windows. This building is significant due to its date, function, and design.
