Description

The Mill at Grimstone is a water grist mill dating from the mid to late 19th century. It is constructed of rendered brick and features a slate hipped roof with deep eaves. The mill has a small rectangular plan and houses an overshot wheel on its north side.

The exterior consists of three storeys, with a symmetrical two-storey east front facing the road. This front includes a central door and a loft door above, with a hoist in the gable. The ground at the rear is at a lower level, featuring a doorway to the right of centre and a two-light casement window above, which has glazing bars. There are later lean-tos on the west and north sides, covered with corrugated sheet steel roofs.

Inside, the 19th-century mill machinery remains intact and was made by Woods and Co, Stowmarket. The wheel-pit is located within the mill, containing an iron overshot wheel mounted on a wooden axle. It also features iron bevel gearing on wooden axles, a single set of stones on a stone floor, and a sack-hoist in the loft above. The roof is supported by braced collar roof trusses.
