Description

Muckleford Farmhouse is a detached farmhouse dating to the late 17th century, with an 18th-century extension at the east end and a late 18th-century addition at the rear (north-east). The walls are constructed of banded flint and stone, rubble stone, and brick. It has a slate roof with stone gable copings and moulded kneelers, and brick stacks are located at the left-hand gable, on the ridge right of centre, and at the right-hand gable. The farmhouse is two storeys high and has four windows with 3-light 19th-century iron casements, featuring leaded lights in wooden frames. A 2-light sash window with intersecting glazing-bars at the head is located on the ground floor, in the second bay. A blocked doorway, situated between windows 1 and 2, has been filled with flint and rubble. The rear elevations include a north-east wing constructed with brick- and-flint banding in a Flemish bond, with a plat band. A present main entrance at the rear is accessed via a 20th-century porch that features a stone gable coping with a cross. A six-panel door and fanlight are present above the door, also from the 20th century. A pentice-roofed outshut runs along most of the rear wall, to which the porch is attached. Inside the west end, the original rear hall contains a wooden door frame with a depressed-arch head, slightly chamfered and dating back to the 16th century (though now relocated). A ceiling beam is straight-chamfered, featuring stepped stops. The original door passage was incorporated into a central room in the 18th century, which includes a large open fireplace with a straight-chamfered lintel and stone jambs, dating from the 18th century.
