SY67SE INCLINE ROAD, Grove 969-1/1/143 (North West side) 21/09/78 Sentry box with gate pier c 30m W of N entry to St. Peter's Church

Sentry box to former prison work ground. Probably c 1848. Portland stone wall contains a box set in, with flush frontage; segmental head on chamfered jambs to plinth stop, a slate projecting course as weathering above opening to presumed projecting timber shelter, now removed. Interior c 600mm x 900mm. Subsidiary features: immediately to the left is a rhomboidal-shaped gate pier apparently from one very large Portland stone block; rises c 3.5m to pyramidal crown. Wall continues right with series of concrete buttresses for c 20m. Built in association with Portland Prison: the first convicts were brought here to quarry stone for the Breakwater (qv).
