Description
The sentry box, located approximately 30 meters west of the north entry to St. Peter's Church, was likely built around 1848 and served the former prison work ground. It features a wall made of Portland stone that contains a box with a flush frontage. The box has a segmental head on chamfered jambs leading to a plinth stop, and there is a slate projecting course above the opening, which was intended for a timber shelter that has since been removed. The interior dimensions of the box are approximately 600mm by 900mm.
To the left of the sentry box is a rhomboidal-shaped gate pier, carved from a single large block of Portland stone, which rises about 3.5 meters to a pyramidal crown. The wall continues to the right with a series of concrete buttresses extending for about 20 meters. This structure was built in connection with Portland Prison, where the first convicts were brought to quarry stone for the Breakwater.
