Description
The boundary wall to the west of the Parish Church of St Peter, with a south-west gateway, was built in 1841. It is made of gritstone that is coursed, squared, and cut to an ashlar finish, with cast-iron railings and an overthrow. The wall is approximately 65 meters long and 1 meter high, rising to 1.5 meters from the north to the south end. It extends from the west pier of the north-west gateway to the churchyard along Church Row. At the north end, there are two courses of ashlar, raised with coursed squared blocks to accommodate the drop in ground level. The wall features gabled coping with seating for missing railings along most of its length, although a short section of railing with arrow-head finials to the bars survives to the left of the gateway. The gate piers are approximately 3 meters high, with a square section, chamfered plinth, panelled sides, cornices featuring quatrefoil panels, and two-tier pyramidal caps. The overthrow consists of paired square-section bars linked by a palmette motif at cornice height, with scrolls on each side of the lantern bracket. Historically, this gateway was one of the main entrances to the precinct of the old Church of St Peter and remained in use after its rebuilding between 1839 and 1841. Before the establishment of the current line of The Calls around 1830 to the south, the medieval route from the manor house and Briggate to the east passed through this lane and the churchyard to Timble Bridge.
