Description

A mill and warehouse, dating from the early 19th century, it was converted into flats, offices, and a public house in 1994-5. The building is constructed of red brick, with the east gable rendered, and has a slate roof with gable copings and short stacks at both ends and in the centre, projecting above the ridge, along with a hoist above the eaves. It rises six storeys to The Calls, and seven storeys to the river side. The facade to The Calls has 14 first-floor openings arranged symmetrically around a central line, featuring a tier of loading doors flanked by 3 small segmental-arched windows; this arrangement is repeated on both sides. The Calls elevation has loading doors with 20th-century frames and grilles, 20th-century ground-floor openings, and the ground floor is cement rendered with a rusticated ashlar finish. The river facade has basement entrances with wide segmental arches, stone voussoirs, and keystones, alongside narrow doors and windows; a stone projecting band is located at ground floor level. Stone window sills are present, and some cast-iron small-pane frames remain. Stone loading platforms are on the right side, supported by brackets similar to those at Simpson’s Fold warehouse on Dock Street. The interior reveals a structural wall, indicating the building was originally divided into two properties. The building occupies a significant location near the southeast corner of the Cloth Hall and on the river’s edge, crossing a narrow goit that joins the river at this point.
