Description

This building, comprising numbers 46 and 48 New York Street, is a restaurant premises dating from approximately 1900, with alterations made in the 20th century. It exhibits a Classical style and features a distinctive Marmo façade—a matt-glazed faience that mimics the appearance of marble—covered by a slate roof. The building is three storeys high and comprises three bays. The central bay is narrow and contains a panelled entrance door with a fanlight set within a keyed moulded arch, surmounted by a scrolled pediment. Flanking the entrance are plate-glass windows. The upper floors are punctuated by round-arched windows, with the keystone of the first-floor window acting as a bracket for a small, shallow curved balcony on the second floor. Showroom-type windows with original stained glass in the upper lights are positioned on either side of the central bay. The facade is further embellished with pilasters, an eaves band, a moulded cornice, and a blocking course that includes a central segmental pediment with a finial. The interior was not inspected. The building represents a fine example of the quality of design and manufacture achieved by the Leeds Fireclay Company of Burmantofts before the First World War.
