Description
The Grove, formerly known as The Grove Hostel, is a building likely dating from the mid-18th century, with alterations made in the late 18th or early 19th century. It features a yellow brick front, red brick sides, and a stucco rear, standing three storeys tall. The eaves cornice and parapet ramp upwards on the east elevation, and there are stone strings present. The façade includes five sash windows with glazing bars. An ashlar porch supported by Tuscan columns leads to a door with moulded panels and a semi-circular fanlight set in panelled reveals. The rear of the building has sash windows with moulded surrounds and an Ionic doorcase. The Grove is part of a group that includes the garden wall to Rax, the garden wall to The Grove, No 32 and its outhouses, the gatehouse of No 32 and its wall, the outhouses to the south of Wykes Court Garden, and several other properties on both sides of Rax Lane and Downes Street.
