Description

Nos 17 and 19 Downes Street are a pair of buildings dating from the early to mid-19th century. They are constructed of ashlar and have a half-hipped slate roof with an eaves cornice. The central part of the front of the building projects forward. The windows are sash windows, with the ground floor windows being three-light. They have doors with semi-circular fanlights, reeded imposts and transoms, and there are pedimented dormers. A large, central red brick stack is prominent.

Nos 17 and 19 form a group with Rax, its garden wall, The Grove, its garden wall, No 32 and its outhouses, the gatehouse of No 32 and its wall, outhouses to the south of Wykes Court Garden, Nos 13, 15, 19 and 31 Rax Lane, and with Wykes Court, its garden wall, the Conservative Club and former stables south of the Conservative Club, and North Street.
