Description
Wykes Court is an early to mid 19th century building that served as the owner's or manager's house for the ropeworks located at No 32 Rax Lane, to which it is attached. The building is constructed of stucco and features a low pitch hipped slate roof with wide eaves supported by brackets. It stands two storeys high and has five ranges of sash windows with glazing bars, and shutters on the first floor. The central doorway is topped by a fanlight and set within a three-centred arched opening, which has a moulded archivolt and moulded roundels at the impost blocks.
To the east, there is an extension made of red brick that rises to three storeys and features a parapet, which is elevated in the center to create a pediment with an oculus in the tympanum. This extension includes bands and one range of sash windows with glazing bars, and a door with a steep pointed arch.
Wykes Court, along with its garden wall, the Conservative Club, and the former stables south of the Conservative Club, forms a group with several nearby structures, including Rax, the garden wall to Rax, The Grove, the garden wall to The Grove, No 32 and its outhouses, the gatehouse of No 32 and its wall, the outhouses to the south of Wykes Court garden, and Nos 13, 15, 19, and 31 on Rax Lane, as well as Nos 17 and 19 on Downes Street.
