Description
No. 52 High West Street is an early 18th-century building constructed of brown brick. It stands three storeys tall and features five ranges of cased sash windows. The building has deep stone strings at the first and second floor levels, which break forward above the centre of the windows. The sash windows, which do not have glazing bars, are topped with stone lintels that include projecting key blocks. The doorway is adorned with a fine early 18th-century hood supported by brackets, featuring intricate carvings of masks and foliage. The parapet has moulded stone coping that sweeps up at angles and is raised in the centre in a semi-circular shape. The ground floor has modern windows and a modern door.
Inside, there is a stone-flagged hall with one side panelled. The staircase is a simpler version of those found in buildings like Colliton House, with balusters that alternate between polygonal and vase-shaped designs, a handrail that ramps up to square newels, and fielded panelling up to dado height.
This building is part of a group that includes Nos 48 to 65A, the Shire Hall, Holy Trinity Church, the Museum, St. Peter's Church, and the monument to William Barnes located in the churchyard immediately south of the West Tower.
