Description
No. 53 High West Street is a Grade II listed building with a late 18th century front that belongs to an older house. The exterior is finished in plaster and features three storeys with five ranges of sash windows. There are string courses at each cill level, with the windows on the two upper storeys being fluted. The building has a moulded cornice and a parapet. A projecting porch is supported by Tuscan columns and features an entablature, with a frieze decorated with alternating paterae and fluting. The entrance door has fielded panelling within a moulded doorcase. The first-floor lower sashes contain late 19th century stained glass. Inside, there are mullioned windows and moulded beams. This property is part of a group that includes Nos 48 to 65A, the Shire Hall, Holy Trinity Church, the Museum, St. Peter's Church, and the monument to William Barnes located in the churchyard immediately south of the West Tower.
