Description

Arcadia is a detached villa built in 1827 by Joseph Wilson, located on the north side of The Street in Charmouth. The villa features stone walls that are stuccoed, with a stucco plat-band. It has a low pyramidal slate roof with projecting modillion eaves and four brick stacks, two at each end of the eaves. The building is two storeys high and has three windows, which are square sashes with thin glazing bars. The ground floor includes tall French windows, also with thin glazing bars, set in shallow elliptical-headed recesses. There is wooden trelliswork framing the windows, topped with copper canopies.

The front door is centrally located, made of wood with six recessed panels and two glass lights above. It features a semi-circular fanlight with glazing bars and a doorway surrounded by reeded pilasters with plain imposts and a dropped key above. The door frame itself has similar reeded motifs.

Inside, the front rooms have rounded rear walls and curving doors that fit the arc. The door knobs are reeded, and the cornices are reeded with disc-in-square decoration. A back window has a round head with pointed-arch glazing bars.

The property is complemented by iron railings and a gate leading to the street, featuring arrow-heads and urns at the divisions, and standing on a sleeper wall.
