Description

38 and 40 Dorchester Road are a pair of semi-detached houses built in the early to mid 19th century. They have a rendered exterior and a slate hipped roof. Originally designed as a symmetrical villa, the two halves now display different details on the street front. Each house has two storeys and two windows.

No. 38 features 4-pane sash windows set on stone sills, and to the right, there is a 6-panel fielded door with a radial fanlight, accessed by one step. The right side of the house has a 12-pane sash window on the first floor and a deep 18-pane stair sash window.

No. 40 has a tent verandah supported by cast-iron uprights and a balustrade, which covers two French doors with transom lights. The ground floor includes a large canted bay window with glazing bars only on the top light of the sashes. To the left, there is a porch with panelled cheeks, a 4-pane transom light, and reeded pilasters, leading to a 6-panel fielded door beneath a plain fanlight. There is also a deep stair light on the left return. The houses have box eaves and a large central rendered chimney stack.

The interior has not been inspected. These houses were likely built around the same time as St Augustine's Church and are part of a group that includes Nos. 34 and 36, as well as 42 and 44.
