Description

Nos. 34 and 36 Helmsley are semi-detached houses built around 1830-1840, with modifications made in the early 20th century. The houses are rendered and feature a hipped slate roof, which has been replaced on No. 36. Originally designed as a symmetrical pair, they now have differing details.

Each house has two storeys and two windows. No. 34 features two 4-pane sash windows set above a large square bay made of yellow brick, topped with a hipped lead roof. The side windows are plain sashes, while the center window is a fixed light with bars, including an arch, beneath a stone lintel with flat scrolled decoration. On the Fernhill Avenue side, there is a 4-pane sash window above deep French doors with a transom light, and an early 20th-century glazed porch with colored small-pane lights above a 4-panel door, along with a deep 18-pane sash stair light. The attached hipped wing includes a tall oriel window with three panes, featuring colored glass.

No. 36 has 4-pane sash windows above a porch similar to No. 34, which also has colored glass panes, above a 6-panel door with a radial fanlight, accessed by one step. To the right, there is a tripartite sash window with brick mullions, under a stone lintel similar to that of No. 34. Both houses have a plinth, box eaves, and a large central chimney stack. The interior has not been inspected. These houses were likely built around the same time as the adjacent St Augustine's Church and are part of a group that includes Nos. 38-44.
