84 And 86, Kingsholm Road

A pair of semi-detached houses dating from around 1820, located on Kingsholm Road in Gloucester. The houses are constructed of brick with stucco detailing, and feature gable-end slate roofs and a tall brick ridge stack on the party wall. They are arranged as double-depth blocks, mirror images of each other, with a recessed entrance wing to the side of each house.

The main block of each house is three stories high, while the side wings are two stories. String courses are present at first-floor level, along with coped parapets. The ground floor of the front of each wing has an entrance doorway with a plain fielded door. No. 84 has a wrought-iron porch with decorative, pierced standards and a swept canopy; No. 86 has a plainer wrought-iron porch, which may be a 20th-century replacement with diagonal bracing in the standards. An original fanlight is above the door. To the left of the porch at No. 84 is a small fixed sash window with margin panes. The main block has four tall sashes on the ground floor, and a single, similar sash on the first floor of each side wing. The first floor of the main block also has four sashes, while the second floor has four shorter sashes; all sashes have glazing bars (3x4 panes, except for the second floor which is 3x3). The first-floor sashes on the main block have decorative wrought-iron window guards. All window and door openings have flat-arched heads with five raised and stepped stucco voussoirs, and all windows have projecting stone sills. A two-story extension to No. 86 was added in the late 20th century. The interior was not inspected as part of the listing process.
