Description

Old Turnpike House is a turnpike tollhouse, now functioning as a house, built in 1822 with mid-20th century alterations. The building is primarily constructed of stucco with ruled masonry joints on brick, and features unrendered brick on the blank north wall. It has a hipped slate roof with boxed eaves and two brick stacks. The structure is octagonal and located at the junction of Kingsholm Road and Sandhurst Road, with a wing on the north side and a short return wing at the north end on the west side.

The house is two storeys high and has a continuous raised band at the first-floor level. The original entrance doorway is located on the ground floor facing Kingsholm Road. The south end of the wing adjacent to the junction with the octagon has been blocked and replaced by a mid-20th century single-storey entrance closed porch in the angle of the wings on the west side. In the octagon, both floors feature mid-20th century sashes with glazing bars (4x4 panes) that have replaced the original casements, which had the same bar pattern. On the east side, both floors have a blank window recess with a raised sill. On the ground floor of the wing on the east side, there is a mid-20th century single sash to the right, and above it on the first floor is a similar sash, both in widened original openings with glazing bars. To the left on the first floor, there is a mid-20th century inserted sash. The return wing on the west side has mid-20th century sashes, with two on the ground floor (4x4) and two on the first floor (4x3). The interior has not been inspected.
