Description

The Girls High School, built around 1900 with later 20th century additions and alterations, was designed by W.B. Wood. It is constructed of red brick with dressed stone details and features tiled roofs with gabled dormers and brick stacks, showcasing a Northern Renaissance style.

The building has two storeys and attics, with a facade that exhibits a 3:6:3 fenestration pattern. The outer wings are gabled and flank a recessed central block. The ground floor includes flat-roofed projections with segmental-arched lights on either side of a gabled porch, which displays the name "GIRLS HIGH SCHOOL" in a cartouche. The porch features a chamfered arch of three orders that dies into splayed jambs, supported by angled pilasters. The first floor is articulated into recessed bays by pilasters and has three-light double-transomed windows with segmental-arched lights. The parapet is crenellated with arched links to stepped merlons, and the gabled dormers contain three-light casements and louvred ventilators.

The wings have tall segmental-arched casements with small-paned timber casements and ashlar imposts, while the left side of the ground floor is blank. Each return has a tall stair tower with a crenellated parapet, set behind more modest porches for Seniors on the right and Juniors on the left. The rear of the building features a parallel-gabled wing with a cross-gabled rear elevation and a flat-roofed range.

Although the interior was not inspected, it is known to retain original joinery and stained and patterned glass. This school is a distinctive and richly-detailed design, reflecting the Free Style commonly used for Board School designs from the late 19th century.
