Description

A semi-detached pair of houses at 49 and 51 London Road, Gloucester, dating from around 1820. The houses are constructed of red brick with stucco detailing, featuring a hipped slate roof and a central brick ridge stack. They are mirror images of each other and have wings extending to the rear on both sides.

The front of the houses is symmetrical, with a parapet. Each house has two bays and recessed entrance doorways within segmental arched surrounds. These surrounds have fanlights with radiating glazing bars and are framed by molded stucco architraves, impost bands, and arches. The doorways have 20th-century glazed panel doors. The ground floor windows are sash windows with 3x4 panes of glazing bars; those on the first floor are similar sashes with 3x2 panes; and the second-floor windows are shorter sashes, also with 3x2 panes. These windows are set within flat-arched openings with five raised, stepped voussoirs and projecting stone sills.

The interior of the houses has not been inspected. The pair represents a complete example and contributes to the group value alongside number 47.
