Description

Claremont House is a detached villa that has been converted into flats, built in 1820. The building is constructed of stuccoed brick and features a hipped slate roof. It is a double-depth block with three storeys, an attic, and a semi-basement.

The exterior has a symmetrical front with three bays and an offset plinth that rises to the ground-floor level. The ground floor is designed with stucco that is grooved to imitate masonry rustication, and there are quoined returns at each outer corner. A projecting band runs at the first-floor sill level. The upper floors are framed by a giant order of shallow pilasters, which have full-height recessed panels and moulded capitals. The outer pilasters are slightly inset from the corners, and there is a crowning entablature with a moulded cornice and parapet above.

A central, projecting porch on the ground floor is single-storey and approached by a flight of stone steps. The porch is designed in the Roman Doric order, featuring pairs of columns at the outer corners that support an entablature and blocking course. The entrance doorway is framed in a moulded architrave and includes side-lights and a segmental arched fanlight with a "batswing" pattern above the lintel. The double doors have fielded lower panels and glazed upper panels with glazing bars, accompanied by similar side-lights. To either side of the doorway, there is a sash window, and each upper floor has three sash windows, all with glazing bars (3x4 panes) set in openings that have projecting stone sills. The interior has not been inspected.
