Description

This is a terrace of eight houses located at 1A-11, 15, and 17 Oxford Street in Gloucester, built between 1823 and 1825 as part of the development of Oxford Street for John Bowyer, an attorney. The houses are constructed of brick that is stuccoed with incised masonry joints, featuring slate roofs and brick stacks on the party walls.

The terrace consists of three storeys and cellars, with offset plinths and a continuous string course at the first-floor level, except for a slightly lower string on No. 1A. There is a continuous moulded crowning cornice with a frieze band and a parapet above. No. 1A was altered in 1990, when the former central entrance doorway was infilled with a sash window featuring glazing bars, and a new doorway was created in the south end wall. Each of the upper floors has a central sash window with glazing bars, with the first floor having three panes by four panes and the second floor having three panes by three panes.

Nos. 3, 5, and 7 have entrance doorways to the left with deep jambs and plain rectangular fanlights, and a sash window with glazing bars (four panes by four panes) to the right of each doorway. On the first floor of each house, there are two tall sash windows, and on the second floor, there are two short sash windows, all with glazing bars and projecting stone sills.

Nos. 9, 11, 15, and 17 have entrance doorways to the right, each with a sash window to the left featuring a lower sill. The window sills on the first floor are at the top of the first-floor string course, and otherwise, all details are similar to those of Nos. 3, 5, and 7. The interior has not been inspected.
