Description

Northgate House, now used as offices, dates from the mid to late 17th century and was refronted in the mid 18th century, with later alterations. The building is constructed of brick with a stuccoed front featuring stone details painted white. It has a gable-end slate roof, brick stacks, and hipped dormers. The structure is a wide double-depth block with a rear wing and stands two storeys tall with an attic.

The exterior presents a symmetrical front, although the windows are not evenly spaced. It features an offset plinth painted black, a continuous cornice with closely set modillions, and a large central pediment adorned with similar modillions. The ground floor includes an entrance doorway framed by panelled pilasters and moulded brackets supporting a pediment above. The six-panel door has fielded lower panels, flanked by three plain 20th-century sash windows on each side. The first floor has six plain sash windows, all set in openings of similar size. The tympanum of the crowning pediment features a central circular window in a moulded frame. There are two hipped roof dormers, each with a pair of casements with glazing bars. Decorative 18th-century cast lead rainwater heads are located at either end of the front, below the cornice.

The interior has not been inspected. The forecourt features tall brick piers with offset plinths and cornices at the outer corners. Between the piers, there is a wrought-iron railing set on a stone plinth, with central wrought-iron double gates framed by decorative wrought-iron standards and an overthrow.
