Description

Weymouth Technical College, built around 1870, was designed by Crickmay and Sons. The building is constructed of yellow and red brick, with some stone banding, and has a slate roof. It’s a complex structure with parallel ranges facing Dorchester Road. A smaller, gabled range is set back to the left, and a broader range is set forward to the right, featuring a porch that rises to a high turret in the internal angle. The right-hand range forms an L-shape, with a gabled return at the rear.

The architectural detailing is broadly in a Ruskinian Gothic style, featuring arched openings filled with four-pane sash windows, with alternating red and yellow brick voussoirs. The left gable is coped with kneelers, above an oculus and a three-story canted bay with brick mullions. The main block has four windows, the two outer ones being smaller than the central two. A one-story porch with a round-arched entry is located to the left, and a portico with arched entries to the front and side rises to a steeply sloped, slated roof with lucarnes. The right-hand gable also has coping and kneelers, with a saddle and finial above an oculus, a two-light window, and a square bay with a balcony featuring a pierced stone balustrade. Ruskinian carving is present on the capitals and detail. The rear return has four linked gables with kneelers over arched lights on the first and second floors; some 20th-century alterations are visible at ground floor level. A wide haunched gable is brought forward on the right, with arched lights and moulded stone sill bands. An escape stair has been attached to the end bay. The rear elevation has various openings with sashes, including a formerly open four-bay ground floor unit with a stone lintel carried on cast-iron columns, which has now been filled and glazed. Above this are four windows at each level, set under a wide gable. The rear range has a hipped north end, and the smaller cross wing is half-hipped at the rear, above triple arched lights. At the time of survey, the building was only partially in use, and many windows were temporarily blocked. The interior has not been inspected. The college is a characteristic example of the Crickmay office's style, reflective of the contemporary architectural fashions.
