Description
The Sandon and Watts Monuments are two table-tombs located 10-15 metres west of the tower of the Church of St Nicholas in Sydling St Nicholas. They date from the late 18th century and are made of stone.
The first tomb is dedicated to William Sandon of Hillfield, who died on October 28, 1793, at the age of 71. It features one fielded panel on each side, tiered fielded-panel pilasters, a moulded cornice, and a hipped top block. There is also a further inscription on the south side.
The second tomb commemorates Henry Watts, who died in April 1731. This tomb has two panels on each side, with putti faces in the cornice and properly articulated pilasters. The end-blocks are adorned with moulded cartouches and memento mori.
