Description
ST EWE POLMASSICK SW 94 NE 1/45 Pair of attached houses about 15 - metres west of Honey Cote
GV II
Pair of attached houses. Circa late C17 - early C18, with additions of early C19 and some later alterations. Rendered stone rubble, the upper level in rendered cob. The house to south has thatched roof with gable ends. Gable end stacks with truncated shafts. The house to north has thatched roof under corrugated iron, with gable ends. Gable end stack to left with large rubble shaft and shaped top; gable end stack to right with rubble shaft with slate weathering and brick chimney. The linking block has slurried scantle slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends. Plan: Two houses, arranged in an L-plan, with one house to south and one house to north; they are linked by a one-room plan addition. The house to south is of 2-room plan with central entrance, each room heated from a gable end stack. The room to right was probably the parlour and the room to left the kitchen. To rear left, there is a one-room plan addition, unheated; this forms the link, built in early C19, between the two houses. The house to north has its front at the left side of the L- plan range. It is also of circa late C17, of 2-room plan, with central entrance, each room heated from a gable end stack. Exterior: The house to south is 2-storey, a nearly symmetrical 2-window front. Ground floor has central plank door with wooden lintel. C19 2-light 3-pane casement to left and right with wooden lintels. First floor has C19 2-light 6-pane casement with wooden lintel to left and right. The right end is blind. The left end has oven at the base of the stack; at upper level the cob is exposed. To rear left is the linking addition; this is 2-storey. At ground floor there is a C19 3-light 6 and 8-pane casement and plank door. First floor has 2-light 4-pane C19 casement. The house to north is 2-storey, a nearly symmetrical 3-window front. Ground floor has C19 4-panelled door with top glazed panel. C19 16-pane sash to right and left. First floor has two C19 16-pane sashes to left and one C19 16-pane sash to right. At ground floor there is a blocked doorway to the left of the door; this may possibly have been a pair of attached one-room plan houses converted as one house circa C19. The left end has large external stack. Interior: Not inspected.
