Description

Lower Baber Cottages are three attached houses, now functioning as two, built in the mid-19th century with few later alterations and additions. The buildings are constructed of slatestone rubble, with some areas rendered and others slate-hung. They feature a slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends, along with gable end stacks and a rear lateral stack.

The layout consists of three houses arranged in an L-plan, with two houses in a range to the left and one house in the front right wing. The two houses on the right have been combined into a single dwelling. The left house has a two-room plan, with a central entrance leading to a room on the left, heated by a gable end stack, and a room on the right, heated by a rear lateral stack. The central house has a one-room plan with an entrance directly into the room, which is heated by a gable end stack on the right. The house in the front right wing is also a one-room plan, heated by a gable end stack at the front. There is a small 20th-century addition at the rear.

The exterior features a main range of two storeys, slate-hung at the front, with a nearly symmetrical three-window front. The first floor has three 19th-century two-light eight-pane casements. The ground floor of the left house has a central door with a hipped hood and a three-light casement on either side. The right house has a similar door and a three-light casement to the right. The left end of the main range is slate-hung at the upper level and has a small single-storey lean-to. The front right wing is also two-storey and rendered, with a two-light casement at ground floor and an external stack with an oven at the base. The inner side of the wing has a two-light casement at first floor, while the right side has a two-light casement at ground floor. The gable end of the main range features a 20th-century door and a single light, with a two-light casement and a single casement on the first floor. The rear has a single-storey addition behind the central house. The interior has not been inspected.
