Description
The Sunday School, located at the northwest corner of the churchyard of the Church of St Dominica, is a building that dates from the early to mid-19th century and has seen few later alterations. It was also used as the parish reading room. The structure is made of slatestone rubble with granite dressings and features a slate roof with ridge tiles and gable ends, including a gable end stack on the right.
This small rectangular building is situated in the corner of the churchyard. On the churchyard side, it is a single-storey structure built into the raised bank of the churchyard, allowing access to the lower room from outside the churchyard at the rear. Both rooms are heated by the gable end stack, and there is a small lean-to on the right end, which has its own separate brick stack for heating.
The exterior is symmetrical with a two-window front. The central entrance features a 19th-century four-centred arched door with cover strips and a square hood mould that has label stops. There are two-light windows on either side, each with pointed arched lights and diamond glazing bars, and similar hood moulds above. The right side includes a single-storey lean-to with a four-pane light and a single light in the gable end. The rear of the lean-to has a door, while the left side features a blocked doorway at ground level and an external stone stair leading to a door at the upper level, which also has a four-centred arch. Above this doorway is a bellcote, and there is a six-pane light in the gable end. The rear of the building has a lower-level door with an overlight, flanked by two-light six-pane casements with brick segmental heads. There is a single-storey porch on the left with a 20th-century door. The interior has not been inspected.
