Lodge With Attached Walls And Piers At The North West Entrance To Heligan House

The lodge with attached walls and piers is located at the north-west entrance to Heligan House and dates from the mid to late 19th century. It is constructed of slatestone rubble with stone dressings and features a slate roof with lead rolls along the ridge and gable ends, as well as deep eaves. The building has an axial stack with diagonally set rendered shafts.

The lodge has a T-shaped plan with two rooms; one room is to the right and includes a front entrance porch, while there is a one-room plan cross wing to the left. The structure is two storeys tall and displays an asymmetrical front, with the gable end of the cross wing on the left and the porch and main room on the right. All windows are from the 19th century and feature granite quoins. The gabled porch has a 20th-century door with an ogee fanlight.

On the left gable end, there is a three-light casement window at ground floor and a two-light casement window at first floor, both with chamfered wooden mullions and lattice glazing set in chamfered granite surrounds. The right end of the lodge has a canted bay at ground floor with a hipped roof and casements. The left side of the cross wing also features a three-light casement window at ground floor with a chamfered granite surround and a brick relieving arch. The rear gable end of the wing has a similar two-light casement at first floor and a single two-centred arched light at ground floor.

Behind the main range is a low single-storey service wing with a small 20th-century addition at the end. The entrance walls are attached to the left side of the lodge, consisting of a short range of granite ashlar wall with chamfered granite coping, approximately one metre high and three metres long, flanking the gateway. There is a central pair of square-plan ashlar piers with blind panels and pyramidal tops, each about one and a half metres high. The interior has not been inspected.
