Description

Western Cottage and Eastern Cottage are a pair of attached houses built around the late 18th century to early 19th century, with some 20th-century alterations and additions. They are constructed of slatestone rubble with brick dressings, featuring a mix of rendered and slate-hung surfaces with rag slates. The hipped slate roof has ridge tiles, and there is an axial stack with a brick shaft, along with an end stack to the right that has a rendered shaft; the left end stack has been removed.

The layout consists of two rooms in each house, with central entrances. The inner rooms are heated by back-to-back fireplaces from the axial stack, while the outer rooms are heated by end stacks. Each house has a small single-storey outshut at either end, likely added in the late 19th century.

The exterior is two storeys high and features a symmetrical four-window front, with each house displaying a symmetrical two-window front. All windows are 20th-century, 2-light, 8-pane casements with cambered stone arches and keystones, positioned to the left and right of the doorways. Western Cottage has a central 20th-century half-glazed door with a gabled hood supported by wooden posts. Eastern Cottage features a central 20th-century four-panelled door with a gabled hood on brackets.

On the left end, there is a single-storey outshut with a hipped roof, containing a 20th-century 2-light, 6-pane casement and a half-glazed door. The right end has a single-storey outhouse with a half-hipped roof, rendered, and includes a 20th-century door and a 6-pane window. At the rear, Western Cottage is rendered and has 20th-century 2-light, 8-pane casements on the first floor and one on the ground floor to the right. The rear of Eastern Cottage is slate-hung with rag slates, featuring a 20th-century 2-light, 8-pane casement on the ground floor to the left and two similar casements on the first floor. The interior has not been inspected.
