Description

The piggery and cartshed, also known as a traphouse, dates from around 1860 and is located at the rear of Carminowe Farmhouse in Mawgan-in-Meneage. It is constructed of shale rubble with dressed granite quoins, jambstones, and lintels, featuring scantle slate roofs that are part grouted and part slurried, following the slope of the land. The structure includes a range of five pig pens on the left, with the far left pen being larger for weaned pigs. Each pen has doorways and drain holes at the front and feeding hatches at the rear. The trap house on the right is designed to allow swill to be taken from the kitchen to feed the pigs, serving a secondary function as a lobby.

The west front showcases the five-door piggery on the left and a large doorway for the trap house on the right. The piggery's design follows the land's slope, with the left doorway being wider. All openings retain their original ledged doors or hatches, while the trap house features double doors, one of which was removed during a survey in 1986, with a slightly cambered oak lintel above.

Carminowe has historical significance as an important manor since the 13th century and is part of a planned group of buildings that are innovative in design and well-preserved. The trap house is one of two similar structures flanking the gateway to the rear courtyard of the farmhouse, with the other being a stable, complementing its function.
