Pair Of Cottages 30 Metres To North West Of Post Office Comp No.3 Can Cottage And Cottage To South

This pair of cottages, known as No. 3 Can Cottage and the cottage to the south, dates from the early 17th century. They are constructed of rendered and painted stone rubble and cob, featuring a corrugated iron roof with gable ends on the left and a rag slate roof with gable ends on the right. The cottages have projecting end stacks with later brick shafts and a truncated axial stack to the right of center.

Originally, the building was likely a three-room house with a cross or through passage plan, which was later divided into two cottages. The entrance is located to the left of center, leading to a service room on the left, heated by an end stack. The hall is heated by the axial stack in the higher cross wall, while the inner room to the right is also heated by an end stack. The left-hand cottage has a two-room and central passage plan, while the right-hand cottage includes the inner room and features a row of 19th-century single-storey pig houses on the front right, which have been converted into a kitchen.

The exterior is two storeys high with a three-to-one window front. The left-hand cottage has early 19th-century casements with horizontal sliding hinges, a 20th-century glazed door in a gabled painted brick porch, and is flanked by two three-light casements, with three two-light casements on the first floor. The right-hand cottage has a 20th-century door and a two-light casement on the ground floor, along with a two-light casement on the first floor. The single-storey pig houses that have been converted into a kitchen project to the front right.

Inside the right-hand cottage, there are 19th-century floor joists and a stair, possibly located in an earlier stair projection at the rear. The lintel to the fireplace has been renewed, but the first floor was not inspected. The interior of the left-hand cottage is not accessible.
