Description
Hellescott House is a mid-19th century steward's house for the Bedford Estate, now a private residence. It is constructed of rendered stone rubble with a raised plinth and a flat string band at the first floor. The roof is made of rag slate with hipped ends, and there are rendered axial and end stacks. The layout features a central entrance leading to a stair hall, flanked by two reception rooms that have fireplaces on the rear wall. A kitchen is located in a wing to the rear right, heated by an end stack, creating an original 'L' shaped plan. Service rooms are situated in the cellar. In the later 19th century, the house was extended with a wing to the rear left, resulting in a roughly square overall plan.
The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-window front that retains its original windows and glass. A central 19th-century porch with a flat roof features 19th-century doors and 20th-century windows in the side walls. The flanking windows are two 19th-century 12-pane sashes, with three similar sashes above. The garden front also has 19th-century 12-pane sashes, though the glazing bars have been removed from the kitchen window.
Inside, the house is largely complete, featuring original doorcases, cornices, and partitions. The 19th-century staircase has stick balusters and a wreathed and moulded mahogany rail, although the chimney-pieces have been removed.
