Description
Hellescott Bridge is a road bridge and causeway located in North Petherwin, part of the EgloSKERRY area. It dates from the late 18th century, with earlier abutments. The bridge was widened to the east in the late 19th century, and some of the parapets were partly rebuilt in the 20th century.
Constructed from stone rubble with granite dressings on the west face of the arch, the bridge spans the River Ottery. Originally, the roadway was only six feet wide. The dressed granite segmental arch on the west side features a large keystone, and the finely dressed abutments are likely from an earlier period. The late 19th-century widening includes a rounded slate stone rubble segmental arch. The causeway crosses lush water meadows to the south and has a series of stone rubble flood arches, which were extended to the east in the late 19th century to allow for the road widening.
Historical records by Henderson indicate that in 1809, the bridge had two nine-foot-wide arches and a roadway that was six feet wide.
