Description

The Old House and rear boundary wall is a house built in 1848 for the Duke of Bedford's steward, located on London Road in Sibson-cum-Stibbington. The structure is made of dressed limestone rubble with freestone and ashlar dressings, topped with Welsh slated roofs and features ashlar gable end stacks. It stands two storeys high with an attic and cellars, and a rear addition from around 1850 that completes its double pile plan.

The facade is symmetrical and consists of three bays. The entrance is marked by a pilastered stone architrave with three-block rustication leading to a round-headed arch, which contains a four-panelled door with a patterned round-headed fanlight above. There is an ashlar plinth that runs continuously around two two-storey bay windows, which have chamfered reveals and nine-paned hung sash windows. Above the entrance, there is a central blind window with a moulded cornice. The house also has two 20th-century casement dormer windows and a cast iron boot scraper beside the entrance.

Inside, the details are from the 19th century, although the original plan has been slightly altered at the rear. Unattributed plans that are similar in detail can be found in the Bedford Estate records at Bedford Record Office.
