Description

Two estate houses, dated 1857, built for the Duke of Bedford and possibly designed by S.S. Teulon. They are constructed from hammer-dressed limestone with some red brick, featuring freestone dressings. The roofs are tiled, with an ashlar end stack to the left, and two ridge stacks with two and one shafts and chamfered cornices. The houses have a two-storey, double pile plan with extensions. The east elevation features a chamfered plinth that runs continuously around the projecting gabled wing to the right, and a gabled porch to the left. A panelled door is set within a two-centred chamfered stone arch, and chamfered stone architraves frame cast iron casement windows with latticed glazing bars: three ground-floor three-light windows, one ground-floor two-light window, and four similar first-floor two-light windows. A side entrance is located at No. 6. The houses share similarities with two other groups of estate cottages in Wansford.
