Description
A row of six estate houses on Elton Road, Sibson-cum-Stibbington, built in 1836 for the Duke of Bedford, possibly by S.S. Teulon. The houses are constructed of hammer dressed limestone with ashlar and freestone dressings, and have collyweston stone slated roofs. They feature five symmetrical ridge stacks with moulded cornices.
The houses form a long north-south range with paired central and single gabled wings, and incorporate four lean-to porches set into the angles (two to the north, two to the south). Details include moulded stone eaves cornices and a chamfered plinth, along with ashlar quoins. The porches have chamfered two-centred arches, unglazed side lights, and inner boarded doors. The windows are cast iron latticed casements, with eight on the ground floor and two- and three-light arrangements on the first floor. The mullions have an ovolo moulding that continues into the two-centred arched heads, recessed within flat stone arches, and feature stone cills. Four chamfered gable recesses exist, two of which contain plaques.
Internally, the houses have a two-room plan with a boxed staircase. No. 1 was formerly a saddler's shop. An estate map from 1838 is held at the Bedfordshire Record Office.
