Description

Nos. 6 and 8 on Elton Road are a pair of cottages that were formerly a farmhouse, dating from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with 19th-century additions and alterations. The buildings are constructed from coursed dressed limestone and rubble, featuring freestone quoins that are chamfered and rounded on the south side. They have Collyweston stone slated roofs with chamfered copings at the parapet gables, an ashlar gable end stack on the left, and a tall central ridge stack.

The cottages are one storey with an attic. The back range of No. 6 is from the 18th century and includes hipped dormer windows and wooden lintels over the ground floor openings. The back range of No. 8 is from the late 17th century or early 18th century, characterized by a parapet gable and an end stack.

The main elevation has two entrances, each with chamfered wooden lintels and 18th-century glazed six-panelled doors. There are two ground floor 20th-century metal casement windows and two similar windows in the large gabled dormers. The south elevation features a one or two light ovolo moulded mullioned casement window. This building is one of several that were altered around 1770 for the Duke of Bedford.
