Description
Winch House, dating from around the 18th century, is located on the beach at Cadgwith in Grade-Ruan. The building is constructed of stone rubble and features a slurried scantle slate roof, which has a gabled section facing the road to the north-west and a half-hipped gable towards the sea on the south-east. There is a brick stack on the north-west gable.
The house is two storeys tall and has an asymmetrical design, with large areas of blank wall and a rounded corner. On the south-west side, there is a large opening on the ground floor to the left of the centre, which is used for a winch operated by a motor. To the right of this opening is an 8-pane casement window, and there is also a 12-pane casement window. The wall curves around to the south-east facade, where the central ground floor opening has been partly blocked, and a narrow timber door has been inserted. Directly above this opening, there is another blocked area. A rubble stone slip with a cement screed surface extends down towards the sea from the ground floor opening.
On the north-west facade, the ground floor entrance is located on the left-hand side, with a small square opening above it. Additionally, there are two roof lights in the south-east slope of the roof. The older winch machinery, which features gothic detailing, is situated to the north-west of Winch House.
