Description

MAWGAN-IN-PYDAR ST MAWGAN SW 86 NE 1/93 Kitchen garden walls with gate piers about 30 metres south west of Lanherne Carmelite Convent GV II*

Kitchen garden walls with gate piers. Early C18. Slatestone rubble walls, with an inner facing of brick; the brickwork has each course of alternating headers and stretchers. Piers in dressed greenstone with limestone capitals. Plan: Roughly rectangular plan kitchen garden, with the gate piers at the north east side, enclosing about one acre. The walls are about 4 metres high, with a single gateway with wooden door on the south west side. The gate piers are about 3 metres high, of square plan, with a limestone cornice and acorn finials. The gateway is blocked in brick. There is a tunnel leading from Lanherne Carmelite convent, under the road, to give direct access into the kitchen garden.
