Description
The kitchen garden walls, along with two pairs of gate piers, gates, and steps, are located about 5 meters west of Kilworthy House. These structures date from the 18th century, with the gates added in the mid-19th century. The walls are constructed from granite rubble and enclose a rectangular area of about half an acre. They stand approximately 3 meters high on the eastern side, adjacent to Kilworthy House, and decrease in height towards the west due to the slope of the ground.
On the eastern side, the walls feature coursed rubble on the outside and random rubble on the inside. A flight of steps leads up to a pair of gate piers that are about 4 meters high, square in section, and topped with a cornice and shaped top. The cast iron gates have knob and urn finials and diagonal braces. The second pair of smaller piers, located in the western range of the wall and aligned with the main entrance, are of similar design and stand about 2 meters high. There is also a gateway in the south wall that features a segmental stone arch, with a keystone that has a carved mask, believed to have originated from Tavistock Abbey.
