Description
Kilworthy Cottages is a row of four cottages that were once part of The Duke of Bedford's estate. They were built in the mid-19th century, with some alterations occurring in the 20th century, as noted during a survey in December 1985. The cottages are rendered and lined out, featuring a hipped slate roof with rendered ridge stacks.
Each cottage has a central porch that leads to a passage, with rooms on either side, following a double depth plan. They are two storeys high, built on a plinth, and each house has a 2-light casement window with glazing bars on both sides of a gabled granite rubble porch. The porch has a chamfered surround to the doorway, which features a shaped head and a slate number plate in the gable. There are also two gabled dormers, each with a 2-light casement window with glazing bars.
The central ridge stack heats the inner room of each cottage, while an additional ridge stack heats the outer rooms. The right side of the row has a similar gabled porch to No. 4, with a 2-light casement window above it. The left side has a similar porch to No. 1, with a door that has raised cover strips and a 2-light casement window above. The rear of the cottages has four plain doors, each accompanied by single and 2-light casement windows arranged symmetrically, with 2-light casements above each door. All casements feature glazing bars, with 10 panes on the ground floor and 8 panes on the first floor, mirroring the gabled dormers found on the front. The interior was not inspected.
