Description

Russell Court, built around 1835 by architect Gilbert Scott, was originally designed as a Union Workhouse. It features a classical style similar to other workhouses designed by Scott in Tiverton, Bideford, and Williton. The front range is one storey high and includes two projecting wings with a central archway that has a pediment. This archway is made of granite with rusticated voussoirs, while the rest of the building is finished in stucco. At the back, there is a three-storey range with an octagonal central block, where the oblique sides project slightly and have pedimented gables. The building is topped with a hipped slate roof and has a total of nineteen windows in the three-storey range, some of which retain their original twelve panes, while others have been altered.
