Description

Chyvellan Farmhouse and its adjoining outbuildings date from the 17th century or possibly the early 18th century. The farmhouse features painted rubble walls and a grouted scantle slate roof with rubble gable-end stacks. It has cast-iron ogee gutters. The barn on the left has a corrugated asbestos roof with gable ends. The original layout of the farmhouse consisted of two rooms: a hall/kitchen on the right and a parlour on the left, with a passage between them leading to a rear stair outshut. In the late 18th century, a pantry outshut was added to the left of the stair. In the 19th century, a two-storey barn or shippon was constructed adjoining the left side of the pantry, and a single-storey range was built at right angles to the front right of the house.

The exterior is two storeys high and features a nearly symmetrical three-window front facing southeast, with a doorway to the left of the middle. There is a single-storey building, now part of the house, adjoining the right side of the front, with its openings facing left, and a barn front set back on the left. The house has a late 19th-century four-panel door, with the top panels later glazed, and 8-pane horned sash windows of a similar date. The original openings are preserved. The barn front includes a doorway to the right of the middle and another at the far left, along with a loading doorway to the first floor in the middle and small window openings with ledged doors. The interior retains features and structure from the mid to late 19th century and has seen little alteration since then.
